about

Hello!

In the Spring of 2015 I was introduced to Matthew Agoglia by my boyfriend Jeremy Moore (Matt had mastered one of Jeremy's records). After seeing our spring Rockwood show, and a few brief conversations, he invited us up to his studio in Beacon for a visit. So on a beautiful day in June upstate we went - I grabbed my guitar, printed out lyrics for every song in my head, and tried not to be nervous...

It's one thing to dream up an album of songs in Mexico and play them for your friends, family, stray cats. It's quite another to play them for someone in the music industry.

I sat on a stool in the back of the studio with my guitar, behind the mixing equipment near a room microphone, and played song after song. Started things off with Last Night I Was a Virgin because it felt strong to me. No one said anything after the first song, which was a little nerve-wracking. I just kept going and gradually warmed up to the situation.

We laughed about the simple pop of Magnetic Joy (and you can hear Jeremy singing along). We chatted about the ideas behind each one. Matt gave me some notes on various ways to play a song, how they might develop or evolve (bridges, hello), discussed collaboration, influences.

And at some point during that session and the days that followed (thanks to the time and efforts of the people in the room that day and many, many others) a rough collection of songs born in Mexico began to take shape and become a new album.

These are not perfect takes - they have been edited for time and boredom. But I think you can hear the potential and excitement for this record that existed from the very start, the SPARK. And that, dear friends, is everything.

Hope you enjoy these views behind the album.

Love,
RR
